01Legal drinking age comes first
guaro.co is written for adults of legal drinking age. In Colombia that's 18, and the law prohibits selling alcohol to minors (Ley 124 de 1994). In the United States it's 21. If you're traveling, the rule that applies is the one where you are. We don't sell alcohol, and nothing on this site is an invitation for anyone under age to drink.
02The guaro round, done right
In Colombia, aguardiente is poured in rounds and shared. The point of a round is the toast and the company, not how much ends up in your glass. These habits keep the tradition what it's meant to be:
Passing is always fine
"No, gracias" is a complete answer. Raise water or a soft drink for the toast. A good host respects it and so does a good guest.
Small pours, slow rounds
Aguardiente is commonly bottled at about 24–29% alcohol. Keep pours small, leave time between rounds and alternate with water.
Eat first, keep eating
Picada, empanadas, arepas, a bandeja at the finca. Food on the table slows everything down in the best way.
Si tomas, no manejes
Never drink and drive. Pick a driver before the first round or plan a taxi or ride app. Colombia sanctions drunk driving with heavy fines, license suspension and vehicle immobilization (Ley 1696 de 2013).
Keep alcohol out of the water
Pools, rivers and the sea don't mix with drinking. Keep the bottle away from the water's edge, and keep an eye on kids around the pool at all times.
Watch your glass, watch your friends
Don't leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers. Make sure everyone in your group gets home safely.
03When not to drink at all
- If you're under the legal drinking age where you are.
- If you're driving, operating machinery, swimming or responsible for children.
- If you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
- If you take medication that interacts with alcohol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- If you're in recovery, or you've decided not to drink. That's the whole reason. No explanation owed.
04Know the signs of alcohol poisoning
Confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, pale or bluish skin, low body temperature, or someone who can't be woken up. Don't let them "sleep it off." Keep them on their side and call for help right away.

Come antes y durante
Si tomas, no manejes
Cuida tu trago y a tus amigos
03Cuándo no tomar
Pregúntale a tu médico o farmacéutico.
